Oktoberfest CX

Second cross race, and feeling much better. Though, someone, please be honest - am I slower this year, or is the whole women's field that much faster??

This race had the very special distinction of being about 5 blocks from home. No bumming a ride, no rental car, no early morning departure... just a nice, regular breakfast and coffee, packed up the bike trailer, and off to the races with plenty of time to spare.

In my "pre-warm-up" course inspection, I toppled over on a paved uphill section. It seems that I forgot the golden rule about quick releases needing to be *really* tight, and with my massive power, managed to pull the wheel out of the dropouts, locking it up and sending me down on my side. One small bruise on my leg, one large bruise to my ego.

The race itself went much better. I spent the first lap or so with a group (yay!) before it fell apart. I'm not even sure what happened - suddenly, there was a gap, and it got a bit bigger until I was riding by myself in no-man's land. I was loving the backside of the course. Well, maybe not the giant run-up, but the off-camber bumpy descent was awesome for just letting the brakes go and getting lots of free speed!

Same result as Guelph (5th place Senior Women), but feeling more confident about progress I can make, and just having fun trying to do so. Bonus: didn't get lapped by the lead woman this week!

Lots of "retired" women coming out of the woodwork, and others racing this year who normally wouldn't. All because worlds in US and Nats in Toronto. But you are still kicking butt, and most importantly having fun!
