"Oh sure. Even communism works. In theory."

It was one of those days where I (typically) refused to give up on the fact that I wouldn't be able to do a midweek mountain bike training race. And since I've had a beer and gained a bit of perspective, I've realized I might not be able to at all this summer. In theory, it's a great idea, and would be excellent training. In practice? It'll probably always end like this: leaving work too late; busting my butt to get home, either making my ride late or having to use car-sharing; stuck in rush-hour traffic; getting to the park stressed, anxious, and barely on time. Today I made it through the first two, knew I wouldn't make it on time, and had the roommate talk some sense into me.

Would it be worth it for the training? Dunno. I'm probably better off staying in the city, and either getting some mountain bike skills practice in locally, or doing a decent road workout. I think I need to rethink my training around this one.

It's another lesson to me in balance. And a further reminder that I need to learn how to cut my losses - I should have recognized way earlier that it wasn't meant to be, at least not tonight, and not rushed home like I did. But alas, it's unlikely I'll develop that skill overnight!

On the other hand, when I was rushing home on Monday (late, again), I made another commuter smile. I was killing it on my cruiser, all dressy for work but jamming up past the university, and this guy behind me at a traffic light said "Girl, you can really cook on that bike!"
