Your Guide to the Change in Seasons

Yes, kids, it is coming. Cyclocross season is almost upon us. I know, I know, it always comes up so quickly... suddenly you are pinning numbers for that first race, wondering what happened to all that time you had to lose 5lbs, practice technique, and get in at least a few secret training sessions, while hoping you remembered how to handle an off-camber corner without high-siding yourself.

There are signs of the coming cross season, but you need to know what to look for:

1. Increase in communication from cross-specific friends. The fall is a time to be using cross-specific skills, and to see people you really don't see any other time of year. If you race mountain bikes, maybe it's a roadie who is out on the asphalt all summer. It starts out as a link to a video here, a question about travelling to races there... next thing you know, you are exchanging a dozen emails a week.

2. Increased traffic at CXO. In the very least, it's reassuring that you aren't the only one who can't stop thinking about mud and skinny tires.

3. Cooler weather and/or changing leaves and/or other people complain about summer ending. Ignore these other people - but when someone mentions days getting colder or shorter, you'd best have at least started gluing those tubulars!

4. Other people complain that you never shut up about cyclocross. With increase in thoughts about CX, it's inevitable that you will bore your friends and loved ones to death talking about equipment options, race schedules. By the time they hit a breaking point and tell you to shut up, that first race is probably just about a week away!
