So... that was not such a great start to the season!
First cross race of the season, and a major shock to the system. Obviously, the pacing for a cross race is quite different than that fun eight-hour! And, well, the time off between races didn't really help my cause a whole lot, either.
The first lap was not too bad, but I was definitely surprised by how fast the whole field was. Or maybe I'm getting slower? Either way, I was hurting pretty bad, and fell back a few spots before getting settled. Settled, that is, until my back decided it wanted out, and I had to soft pedal the last two laps. Never before have I wanted to quit so bad, but well, the prospects of a DNF when it's within my control (i.e. not a mechanical, and I haven't broken anything) doesn't sit well with me, so I toughed it out and called it "good training".
Things I cursed during my race:
- the hill (3 x per lap!)
- the course designers
- my lower back
- my own busy-ness/laziness for not riding for the entire week leading up to the race (yeah, yeah, I know)
Thank god I still think cross is fun, and the people are awesome, and the Boy won a case of beer, or I may never go back. I'm already ready for more suffering this Sunday in Christie Pits.
